The most common pump types are sand filter pumps, and cartridge filter pumps:

• Sand filter pumps work by filtering the water through a series of sand bags or cartridges. A sand filter pump is a type of filter for pools that uses a sand filled drum to filter the water. The sand particles act as a natural filter media which removes bacteria, algae, and other harmful substances from the water.
• Cartridge filters use filter cartridges that trap debris and contaminants in a porous material. Cartridge pumps can be made out of polyester, polypropylene, or polyethylene plastic. They can be either single-use or multi-use cartridges depending on their construction materials and the manufacturer's design specifications.

Sand filter pumps are more expensive than cartridge filter pumps, but you don’t have to change the filters (replacing sand once every 5 years is fine) and sand filters are going to beat cartridge filters for efficiency every time.
